Psychiatry is the medical specialty dedicated to diagnosis and treatments of mental disorders such as depression, panic disorder, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. In the present day, we have assisted a decrease in stigma related to mental diseases, which made possible an increase in awareness of the problems arising from these pathologies and the possibility of minimizing them with appropriate diagnoses and treatments. It is known today that psychiatric diseases are one of the main causes of the so-called "sickness load" (Burden) among all medical diseases in the world, responsible for great disability and loss of years of life1,2. In Brazil, the prevalence of depression in 12 months is 4.1 to 8% 3-5, and the prevalence of anxious disorders in Brazil is about 9% 5. Today it is known that most serious psychiatric disorders begin early, before age 146, and their non-identification and delay in treatment are the main causes of chronification and severity of cases in the future7. Even in developed countries, up to 86% of people will have a psychiatric disorder up to 45 years8. Thus, psychiatric disorders today are recognized as an important source of suffering, disability, morbidity and mortality in all age groups and in all regions of the world. The psychiatry service (SERPSI) of the Hospital São Lucas da PUCRS was founded in 1975, being integrated by a broad clinical body with several training expertises. Acting in several sectors within HSL, SERPSI psychiatrists stand out by consistent training in clinical psychiatry coupled with a vision of integrated care, which incorporates concepts of various schools of knowledge, such as psychopharmacology and psychoanalysis. The service also has colleagues with training in childhood psychiatry and adolescence, geriatric psychiatry and various areas of adult psychiatry. The SERPSI is a reference in psychiatric interconscutation in the General Hospital, one of the first services of the country to offer specialized consulting for the other medical specialties. It also has a psychiatric hospitalization unit, inaugurated in 1983, being the only private psychiatric infirmary in general hospital in Porto Alegre.

The SERPSI has a differentiated structure to meet the varied demands of patients with psychiatric disorders. We are one of the few hospital services in Rio Grande do Sul that has a psychiatric hospitalization unit (UIP) for private patients. Currently the UIP has 12 semi-private beds, serving adult patients with both sexes, relying on a dedicated multidisciplinary team and the rear of the entire structure and clinical body of HSL / PUCRS. The service also has a semi-private ambulatory service, with 4 service rooms and more than 400 monthly attendances. SERPSI also offers specialized teams in psychiatric interconscult for the various HSL sectors, including the psychiatric urgency consulting, team that meets HSL emergency demands 24 hours a day.

COMMON QUESTIONS

The most appropriate way to assess if you need a treatment is by evaluating a professional, the psychiatrist doctor. A consultation with a psychiatrist can both evaluate the need for treatment and clarifying what factors can influence and protect your mental health.
