Breast diseases represent one of the main points of full care to women's health. Breast cancer is the most frequent neoplasm in women and is the main responsible for cancer-related deaths in the female population, with more than 2 million new cases per year in the world, according to WHO 2020 (World Health Organization). In Brazil, for the triennium 2020-22 66,280 new cases of breast cancer per year are expected. And Porto Alegre, according to 2018 data, is the capital of Brazil with a higher incidence, 114 for every 100,000 inhabitants, according to the Inca (National Cancer Institute).

The accumulation of knowledge in this area has been huge in recent years and breast cancer treatment is considered multidisciplinary, implying the need for studies and decisions based on interdisciplinarity with various specialties such as: Gynecology, radiology, Ultrasonography, general surgery, oncology, plastic surgery, genetics, molecular biology, nuclear medicine, radiotherapy, psychology, pathology and physiotherapy.

Mastology is the medical specialty that deals with breast diseases in terms of prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. Contemplates benign and malignant changes and the mastologist expert attends men and women; children and adolescents; adults and the elderly.

The Breast Center of PUCRS has complete care infrastructure contemplating essential specialties for the multidisciplinary care of breast cancer. In addition, it occurs case discussions with professionals from various areas, aiming at the best service for each patient. The practice of the multidisciplinary discussion of clinical cases allows to apply the evidence-based indications of international protocols, adapting to the reality of each cancer patient or in accompaniment to risk reduction.

The sectors directly linked to mastology specialty at the Hospital São Lucas da PUCRS that are part of our multidisciplinary service are: Clinical Oncology, Oncology Research Center, Radiotherapy, Oncogenetics, Plastic Surgery General Gynecology, Gynecology specialized in fertility preservation, physiotherapy, pathology, nuclear medicine, mammary imaginology (including mammography, ultrasound, resonance), interventionist imaginology for diagnosis (biopsies through ultrasound and tomography), complete imaginology for staging (including pet full body), Chemotherapy, physiotherapy, palliative care team, pre and post operative care clinical team, surgical block, hospitalization unit for postoperative or clinical treatment when necessary.
